West Baltimore Walks on opening day at the West Baltimore Farmer’s Market

We’re excited to announce the start of our summer tour programs at the opening day of the West Baltimore Farmer’s Market on the morning of Saturday, June 4. RSVP for a tour today then read on for more exciting events and volunteer opportunities.

West Baltimore Walks at the West Baltimore Farmer’s Market | Saturday, June 4

Join the Friends of West Baltimore Squares, Baltimore Heritage, and the Parks & People Foundation for the first in an ongoing series of West Baltimore walking tours exploring the parks, gardens, churches, schools, and homes of West Baltimore’s historic neighborhoods. Arrive bright and early at the West Baltimore Farmer’s Market for a tour of Franklin Square and Union Square at 9:00 am or wake up late for a tour of Harlem Park and Lafayette Square at 11:00 am. Both tours are about 2.5 miles so make sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring a bottle of water. RSVP to let us know you’re coming!

Crossing Baltimore Street on the West Baltimore Squares Spring WalkWalking by bioswales on Baltimore Street, native plants in schoolyard gardens at Franklin Square Elementary School, an urban orchard by the Brice Street stables, the H.L. Mencken house, and the site of the Civil War era Jarvis Hospital, our tour of the neighborhoods around Franklin Square and Union Square offer a great introduction to Parks & People Foundation’s innovative urban greening efforts and share the story of West Baltimore’s Civil War era development.

Harlem Park School Community Garden is taking root on Lafayette Avenue

While our recent celebration and tour have highlighted Lafeyette Square and Franklin Square, the Friends of West Baltimore Squares is just as dedicated to supporting community gardens and small parks. Franklin Square Community BBQ with the Friends of West Baltimore Squares – Canceled for rain!

We’re back in Franklin Square this Saturday, May 14 for a Baltimore by Foot walking tour with Baltimore Heritage and the Parks & People Foundation. We’ll be exploring sustainable greening and landscaping in the neighborhood along with the history of Franklin Square’s historic churches and rowhouses. Sign up to join us on the tour or meet us after for the Franklin Square Community BBQ in Franklin Square Park!

Thank you for a wonderful celebration in West Baltimore Squares!

Thank you to everyone came out to walk and celebrate in West Baltimore Squares this past Saturday. Credit for our success must go to all of our generous volunteers and supporters including Samuel Bryant, Andrea Coccia-Leahy, Mary Couri, Mike Dorsey, Arlene Fisher, Johns Hopkins, Scott Kashnow, Bryant Smith, Chris Taylor, the residents of St. James Terrace, and many more. Special thanks to Andrea for designing and producing our new signs, Scott for the birthday cake, Chris for the popcorn machine, and Arlene for hosting our celebration in Lafayette Square Park.
