Don’t forget that this Wednesday, August 24 and next Wednesday, August 31 are the two upcoming 9th District City Council Candidate Forums. Today is also the deadline to register to vote in the September 13 primary in Baltimore. If you are not already registered to vote, print out this form and mail it in today to make sure your voice is heard.

CGRN Plant Giveaway Day with the Friends of West Baltimore Squares

Mount Clare Community Garden, West Lombard Street & Mt. Clare Street
Tuesday August 23, 2011 — Tonight! 5:00pm to 7:00pm

Join the Community Greening Resource Network (CGRN) this evening for a Plant Give-Away Day at the Mt. Clare Community Garden. Stop by to pick up compost donated by the Carlton Street Arabbers Stable. Don’t forget to bring your own buckets for the compost, although you’re welcome to bring a truck if you can use a bit more. CGRN will also have fifty assorted trees donated by Blue Water Baltimore including varieties such as Red Maple, Sweet Birch, Gray Dogwood, Southern Crab Apple, Blackgum, Sycamore, Northern Road Oak and American Linden.
This giveaway day is for CGRN members only but gardeners are welcome to sign-up for membership on site. Membership is a bargain at only $10 a year for community gardeners, $15 for gardeners with private/family gardens. Parks & People is offering the $10 CGRN membership price to all West Baltimore gardeners next Tuesday only, so please join us and take advantage of their generous offer!

Reminder! CGRN Plant Giveaway Day at the Mount Clare Community Garden on Tuesday — Updated

Don’t forget to join us this Tuesday, July 19 for the CGRN Plant Giveaway Day at the Mount Clare Community Garden! UpdateThe CGRN Plant Giveaway Day has been rescheduled due to predicted thunderstorms this afternoon and evening. We have rescheduled this event for Tuesday, August 23. This is just one of many great greening programs coming up with the Franklin Square Blank Lot Planting Day and the Clear Water Environmental Community Art Conference both on Saturday, August 6.

Franklin Square Blank Lot Project Planting Day

Saturday, August 6, 9:00 am to 12:00 pm

Join the Franklin Square Community Association for a planting day to place wood chips on the pathway, planting the third crop of sunflowers and celebrate the completion of the first phase of the project. The day’s work will be followed by a discussion on the next phase of the project and a cookout.

The Blank Lot Project is just one of many community gardens in West Baltimore neighborhoods and we’re looking to share their stories! Follow the Friends of West Baltimore Squares website and connect with us on Facebook to discover more with upcoming stories on the “Gardens of Hope” in the Upton neighborhood and a new effort to establish a community garden at West Fayette Street & North Carrollton Avenue.

Clear Water Environmental Art Conference

The Parks & People Foundation and Art for a Greener Environment invite you to submit your design for a community art installations for eight locations in West Baltimore neighborhoods. Join us on August 6 for a guest lecture of the problems facing water quality in urban environments and lunch followed by a tour of the project sites. Artists interested in submitting a proposal must attend this conference for consideration. A stipend will be awarded to the artists and landscape designers responsible for each selected proposal. Civil War Archeology, CGRN Plant Giveaway Day, and more coming up in July

We have more fun events in July starting with Civil War Archeology in Lafayette Square on Saturday, July 9 and the West Baltimore Squares CGRN Plant Giveaway Day on Tuesday, July 19. We’re also holding a West Baltimore Squares Planning Meeting on July 5 to share ideas and get organized for future projects. Don’t forget to join us this weekend for the Alternate ROOTS Festival and our West Baltimore Walks!

Civil War Archeology in Lafayette Square with Baltimore Heritage

Saturday, July 9, 11:00 am – 3:00 pm, Lafayette Square Park

Join a group of volunteer archeologists in Lafayette Square as we dig into the history of Civil War-era Baltimore. Baltimore Heritage is partnering with the Archaeological Society of Maryland, the Maryland Historical Trust, and the Lafayette Square Association to conduct an archaeological investigation of Lafayette Barracks, a Union military camp and hospital located in Lafayette Square during the Civil War. We will be offering walking tours of the neighborhood, exhibits from the Baltimore Civil War Museum, and grilled hotdogs for visitors and volunteers. Learn more and RSVP at Baltimore Heritage.

CGRN Plant Giveaway Day with the Friends of West Baltimore Squares

Growing opportunities for youth at the Charm City Community Garden

Working with the Metrokidz program at Charm City Church, Michael Dorsey has led an effort to transform a vacant lot at South Payson & Lemmon Streets into a community garden offering access to a safe natural green space to young people in West Baltimore.
