We have more fun events in July starting with Civil War Archeology in Lafayette Square on Saturday, July 9 and the West Baltimore Squares CGRN Plant Giveaway Day on Tuesday, July 19. We’re also holding a West Baltimore Squares Planning Meeting on July 5 to share ideas and get organized for future projects. Civil War Archeology in Lafayette Square with Baltimore Heritage

Saturday, July 9, 11:00 am – 3:00 pm, Lafayette Square Park

Join a group of volunteer archeologists in Lafayette Square as we dig into the history of Civil War-era Baltimore. Baltimore Heritage is partnering with the Archaeological Society of Maryland, the Maryland Historical Trust, and the Lafayette Square Association to conduct an archaeological investigation of Lafayette Barracks, a Union military camp and hospital located in Lafayette Square during the Civil War. We will be offering walking tours of the neighborhood, exhibits from the Baltimore Civil War Museum, and grilled hotdogs for visitors and volunteers. Learn more and RSVP at Baltimore Heritage.

CGRN Plant Giveaway Day with the Friends of West Baltimore Squares

Mount Clare Community Garden, West Lombard Street & Mt. Clare Street
Tuesday, July 19, 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm

Come on by the Mt. Clare Community Garden on Tuesday, July 19 for a plant Give-Away Day with the Parks & People Foundation’s Community Greening Resource Network. Pick up free plants, seeds, buckets donated by businesses around the region, and compost donated by the Carlton Street Arabbers Stable. Additional donations are welcome, contact Katie Dix, the CGRN Coordinator at 410-448-5663 x 128 or for more information.

This giveaway day is for CGRN members only but local gardeners are welcome to sign-up for membership on site. Membership is a bargain at only $10 a year for community gardeners and $15 for gardeners with private/family gardens for benefits including several Give-Away Days each year, access to five community tool libraries across the city, free gardening workshops, and support to organize volunteer work days at your garden.

Growing opportunities for youth at the Charm City Community Garden

Charm City Community Garden Volunteer Day, South Payson & Lemmon Streets

Working with the Metrokidz program at Charm City Church, Michael Dorsey has led an effort to transform a vacant lot at South Payson & Lemmon Streets into a community garden offering access to a safe natural green space to young people in West Baltimore. West Baltimore Walks at the Alternate ROOTS Festival next weekend

We’re all looking forward to next weekend’s 2011 ROOTS Festival— a music, arts and community festival taking place outdoors over the “Highway to Nowhere,” starting at Franklin and North Gilmor Streets with five stages for music, art, dancing and more. We’ll be there both Saturday & Sunday, June 25-26 sharing information on our partnerships and upcoming programs.

More partners & neighbors at the Festival include Baltimore Heritage, the Parks & People Foundation, Franklin Square, Lafayette Square, Harlem Park, West Baltimore MARC TOD Transportation, Inc., the West Baltimore Coalition, Culture Works, and the Neighborhood Design Center. Alternate ROOTS is also partnering with Baltimore Green Works to organize the EcoFestival at Franklin & Calhoun Streets with a nature play space and a long list of green exhibitors and vendors.

Baltimore Heritage is leading tours of historic West Baltimore parks & neighborhoods, starting from the “Community Bridge” at the corner of Franklin & Carey Streets. These one-hour walking tours will take you through Harlem Park & Lafayette Square exploring schoolyard gardens and soaring historic churches and Franklin Square & Union Square stopping by the H.L.
